The most dangerous nuclear threat from NKorea or Iran

Opdateret: 19. jan. 2021

Is not a ballistic missile that could strike a US or European target. Until either of these countries has dozens of nukes and can fit Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles to their missiles, the offensive threat they pose is limited to single strikes with a high chance of interception.

Unless they succeed in putting their nukes into undersea weapons. A nuclear armed torpedo fired from a Nth Korean or Iranian submarine would be the real nightmare scenario. Both nations have subs capable of operating in seas where US/NATO carrier groups and Israeli warships regularly operate.

Nukes fitted to torpedoes or autonomous underwater vehicles (drones) would be hard to detect, even harder to intercept. They would be devastatingly effective against a US carrier group, and potentially even politically deniable. If a nuclear torpedo was detonated beneath a US carrier in the Mediterranean Sea, and Iran denied responsibility (saying it must have been a US weapon accident), how would you prove otherwise?)

Are these nations pursuing subsea nuclear weapons?
