Iran builds an aircraft carrier. Sort of ...

Opdateret: 18. jan. 2022

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards last year fired a missile from a helicopter targeting a replica aircraft carrier in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, in an exercise aimed at threatening the US amid tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Fast forward to January 2021 and the real USS Nimitz and a battle group are plying the Persian Gulf, apparently unimpressed.

Until it brings its new naval prototypes online (a trimaran hulled destroyer and new diesel electric submarine) Iran's only real options for engaging a US carrier are its 'fast missile boats' which can only manage 30 knots on calm seas vs the Nimitz 36 knots.

The narrow confines of the Gulf give the missile boats some chance of getting their missiles away, but they would be easily detected and their missiles quickly engaged by the carrier group pickets and close in weapons systems.
